Publishers Resource Group, Inc., to Evaluate Academics 2000 Grant Programs

2.7.00-Publishers Resource Group, Inc., was recently awarded a contract to evaluate reading-improvement grant programs funded through the Texas Academics 2000 initiative. Since its inception in 1995, more than 700 public school districts and open enrollment charter schools have received over $100 million in grants through Academics 2000 to support locally developed reading-improvement programs.

Administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Academics 2000 is part of the national Goals 2000 effort, which is a federal initiative to raise student achievement across the nation. The National Education Goals Panel (NEGP) recently recognized Texas as one of 12 states that have made significant progress toward meeting the national education goals.

Academics 2000 grant recipients use funds for instructional materials purchase, professional development, preservice education, parental and community involvement initiatives, and other activities designed to increase students' reading performance.

The recent contract award granted by Region XIII Education Service Center enables PRG to continue its evaluation of Academics 2000 to include at least two more cycles of funding, including more than 150 individual grants. PRG's role in the project will include reviewing proposals and evaluation reports, analyzing state reading achievement data, and conducting site visits. Noted research and evaluation expert, Ester Smith, Ph.D. and Cynthia Potter, PRG's Director of Marketing, Research and Evaluation, will lead the project.

During the 1998-1999 fiscal year, PRG successfully managed the program evaluation of reading-improvement programs that received funding in the first five funding cycles.

President and Founder Aileen H. Krassner remarked, "Publishers Resource Group's participation in the evaluation of Academics 2000 and other TEA programs, such as the Educational Technology PILOTS, reinforces our commitment to and expertise in providing comprehensive educational research and evaluation services."
