State Adoption Schedules
What is a state adoption? Roughly half of the states approve
on a set schedule certain textbooks and other instructional materials
in specific subject areas for use in the public schools in that state.
These books have been "adopted" or approved for purchase by the state.
Each adoption state has different rules and procedures that govern the
instructional materials review and adoption process.
In contrast to adoption states, territory states refer to
those states not purchasing textbooks through an adoption process. These
states might purchase instructional materials in all subject areas each
year.
Sources include the Association
of American Publishers's School Division, National
Association of State Textbook Administrators, and information from
a variety of state departments of education.
